Chale is referred to in the Doomsday book as "Cela" almost certainly from the Old English "ceole", a throat, in the transferred sense of a gorge of ravine. There have been settlements in the area since prehistoric times but it is known that there has been continuous settlement in Chale since before 1114 when the Parish Church of St Andrew was founded. It is situated on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, is and always has been a small community. It has a long boundary with the sea and stunning views.
